Mmmm Barium

X-ray Tech: Is there any chance you could be pregnant?

Me: Nope

Why in the world do they have you fill out a form with that exact question on it if they have no intention of ever reading it? After answering that question 20 times in the past couple weeks, it feels like a slap in the face. I realize that the nurses and techs are just doing their job but I can't help but feel a little frustrated. I had an Upper GI done today...the last of my scheduled tests before I see my internal specialist on Friday for all of the results. I've had digestive issues since my gallbladder was removed in 2004...one of the reasons (in addition to infertility) for all of these tests. Aside from the barium tasting like chalk (not that I've ever tasted chalk), the process wasn't too horrible and I just had to lay there as the doc took pics of my insides. There were 2 interns in the room in addition to the doctor and his assistant so I felt a bit on display but I'm starting to get used to this. It was interesting being able to see the barium travel from my esophagus to my stomach...maybe I missed my calling as an x-ray tech. I wouldn't re-ask my patients things that they already took the time to write down. Wish me luck for my Friday appointment!

  1. Hi There,

I have just read a few of your blogs... I stopped at this one because all of the tests that you are going through sound so familiar to me (well, that's because I had to go through them too!). Have you been tested for celiac disease?

I went through 2.5 years of stomach issues - they thought it was an ulcer, they thought is was inflammation, they thought it was everything under the sun except for celiac. On a fluke I asked my doc to test me for it, and surprise surprise, I have celiac disease. Apparently CD can impact fertility if you are not eating gluten free - that was enough to scare me away from ever eating gluten again (I know many celiacs who "cheat").

Anyways, a completely unsolicited un-medical opinion for you.

Hope you have a great Sunday!
